Confession. The first time I ever heard the great Rod Babers on the radio (long before I met him) I wondered who this dude with the funny voice was? Well, that dude as I have come to learn in a short time is 2 things: A. a hell of a good radio man and B. a man with balls.
It's easy to fall in line with the majority who are afraid of change. It'd be easy for him to shun my arrival at Sports Talk AM 1300 The Zone. He doesn't have to accept or tolerate or befriend or support me... but he has and I appreciate it like hell. He's been a pro in how he has treated me and he's also continued to support Bucky who is his friend and mentor. That's how a man acts and I highly doubt he's bull sh****** me. If he thought I stunk he'd tell me or at least he wouldn't have supported me the way he has. Craig Way and Jon Madani have also been very cool and professional through this as well (although Jon may want to choke me out sometimes when I get pissed over tech issues.. Haha!) and I appreciate you boys also.
When I first got the gig in San Antonio it was the same. I was being burned with flame throwers all over the city and many of the people I called my new colleagues turned tail and fell in line with the majority. Years later, now that the show is doing well (by the grace of God) their version of the facts has distorted but I remember. The people I work with at Ticket 760 that I'm close to know who they are and I thank you. Who knows how it's gonna turn out? I may blow up on 1300. I may skid into the wall. I may find another job that's not even in this business.
Whatever happens I'm grateful to Rod Babers. The man with the funny voice is a fine Houstonian with amazing pecs. He's handled a tough situation by acting like a grown up and not a spineless, gossiping high school punk... and I've damn sure never seen him sip tea.
