If you heard the Dan Patrick Show yesterday, you heard the ridiculous 10 minutes of time-wasting, awkwardness that was (injured) Mets P Matt Harvey talking about Qualcomm.
Listening to the interview, it’s apparent that he was simply there to promote Qualcomm...and ONLY promote Qualcomm. How are the Mets? Qualcomm. How's your rehab going? Qualcomm. Blah.
While I certainly don't respect Harvey for wasting your time like that, I'm not surprised. I've seen this coming for about 3-4 years. There are literally SEVEN 24/7 sports radio networks. Plus, a couple hundred sports stations that are trying to follow the national radio formula of "all interviews, every hour, all day long." (BTW, that formula sucks).
It was only a matter of time before the promoters/marketing people/handlers of current AND ex-jocks realized that they could provide their clients AS LONG AS THEY COULD PIMP THEIR BUSINESS. Listen closely. If the interview involves a jock, coach, legendary broadcaster, etc, you will hear a plug for some business. Financial advice. Pain relievers. Ass cream. Boner pills. It's a total joke.
Harvey took it to a whole new level. I assume he will be the new standard of excellence for sports marketing. "Today on the Dan Patrick Show, Jets QB Mark Sanchez will tell us about boner bills. Mark, thanks for joining us...how is your boner these days?"
