San Antonio opens 33-game home schedule December 26 vs. Memphis Grizzlies

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs will tip-off the 2011-12 season on Monday, Dec. 26 vs. the Memphis Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m. to open their 33-game home schedule at the AT&T Center. 

The Spurs will host three games in December, including a matchup vs. Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers on Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and a New Year’s Eve game against the Utah Jazz at 7:30 p.m. 

The home schedule is highlighted by 17 weekend contests that feature seven Friday night games and five Saturday and Sunday matchups. Following every Thursday, Friday and Saturday home game, the popular OVERTIME, presented by Bud Light, will return for fans to enjoy live music and drink specials following the games.

The Silver and Black will welcome the 2010-11 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and again on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. In January, the Spurs will face seven Western Conference opponents at home, including their in-state rival Houston Rockets on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 8:00 p.m. 

The month of March marks the Spurs busiest month at the AT&T Center, boasting 10 home games. San Antonio hosts seven consecutive home games from Feb. 29 through March 14, their longest such home streak of the season. This stretch features games against the Denver Nuggets (March 4), and the only visits by Amare Stoudemire and the New York Knicks (March 7) and Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic on March 14.

New Orleans and Oklahoma City will visit the Alamo City in February, the only visit for the Thunder this season. The Spurs will welcome the Hornets on Thursday, Feb. 2 and two days later host Kevin Durant and the Thunder on Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. for San Antonio’s final home matchup before embarking on their annual rodeo road trip.

The Spurs return home from the rodeo road trip on Wednesday, Feb. 29 to take on Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer and the Chicago Bulls. The Spurs will host the Los Angeles Lakers twice during the final month of the regular season, playing Wednesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, April 20 at 8:30 p.m. The Spurs will close out their home schedule on Monday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. vs. the Portland Trail Blazers. 

Spurs games can be heard on WOAI 1200-AM with Bill Schoening calling the action.

The San Antonio Spurs today announced their 2011-12 preseason schedule, which will feature two games against the Houston Rockets. San Antonio will open the preseason on Saturday, December 17 in Houston at 7:00 p.m. at the Toyota Center. The Spurs will host the Rockets on Wednesday, December 21 at the AT&T Center at 7:30 p.m.
 
Individual tickets for the Spurs home preseason game will go on sale Friday, December 9 at 10 a.m. In a special offer compliments of H-E-B, 3,000 seats in the H-E-B Fan Zone will be available for $5. The home preseason game against the Rockets will air locally on FOX Sports Southwest in high definition. Play-by-play announcer Bill Land and analyst Sean Elliott will call the action. (Sports Network) - The NBA is closer to returning to court, and finally, it's the basketball court.

A meeting lasting roughly 15 hours ended early Saturday morning and resulted in NBA owners and the disbanded players association reaching a tentative agreement to end the lockout.

The work stoppage has lasted nearly five months despite several marathon negotiating sessions between the parties. The stakes were raised earlier this week when the players combined a pair of antitrust lawsuits against the NBA in two different states into the same court in Minnesota.

The NBPA filed a disclaimer of interest earlier this month, disbanding as a union after rejecting the owners' latest offer of a 50-50 split of basketball- related revenue.

Details of the agreed-upon deal were not immediately available.

"We thought it was in both of our best interests to try to reach a resolution and save the game," union executive director Billy Hunter said.

While the deal appears imminent, several hurdles need to be cleared in order for the season to be officially salvaged, including both the owners and reformed union voting on the proposal.

"We've reached a tentative understanding that is subject to a variety of approvals and very complex machinations, but we're optimistic that will all come to pass," NBA commissioner David Stern said.

The league had canceled all regular season games up to December 15, and it was feared the highly-anticipated Christmas Day schedule was in jeopardy.

Stern mentioned the showcase date as the tentative start to a 66-game regular season, beginning with the annual triple-header on December 25.

San Antonio, TX – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Matt Herring has joined the organization as the team’s Director of Athletic Performance.
 
Herring comes to San Antonio after spending the past five years as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the University of Florida men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf programs. He was an integral part of the Gators back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. Prior to his stint in Gainesville, he helped the Oklahoma State Cowboys men’s basketball program reach the 2004 Final Four. He arrived at Oklahoma State University after spending two years as an intern at the University of Texas.
 
“We are thrilled to welcome Matt Herring to the Spurs family to serve as our Director of Athletic Performance,” President of Sports Franchises R.C. Buford said. “Coming from one of the premier programs in college basketball led by Billy Donovan at Florida, Matt brings championship credentials with him and we look forward to the contributions he will bring to our team.”
 
Herring earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise sports science from Southwest Texas in 1994. He achieved his M.Ed. in kinesiology from the University of Texas in May of 2002. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and USA Weightlifting. He also is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Certified Sports Performance Coach.
 
Prior to joining the strength and conditioning field, the Austin native was a teacher in the Schertz school district from 1994-99.
