In the early 90's when the Cowboys got good I really got into reading the newspaper on a daily basis for coverage of the team. My home town paper at the time was the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram and the beat writer for the Cowboys was Josie Karp. Funny name but a heck of a good writer. Josie was informative, intelligent and entertaining. That was THE time to be on the Cowboys beat. I probably read 80-90% of everything Josie wrote in that paper over a 3 or 4 year span before Josie left for CNN. I'll never forget the first time I saw a picture of Josie in the paper, announcing that "she" was leaving for Atlanta. I was stunned. After all these years I had no inclination that Josie Karp was a woman. None. That's when I realized what a sexist bigot I had been. I just assumed that a man would handle the Cowboys beat and "Josie" must have been a nick name. In the subsequent years it's taken me awhile to get the sexism out of my blood stream but I'm just about there. I still don't like listening to a female talk show host but that's probably because I'm surrounded by women on a daily basis at home. I love my girls but the talk show is "boys" time and it's an escape. I know how that makes me look, especially considering that both of my big, big bosses are women. Other than talk shows I have no problem at all with a woman beat writer, columnist or anything else. I think Doris Burke is an excellent play-by-play person. I write this today because I find it sickening that so many dumb butts think it's bunk that Condi Rice is on the CFB playoff committee. Get over yourselves you pigs. She's brilliant and will do a fine job.
