Lance Easley once was a replacement ref. It was Easley who infamously signaled touchdown in the “Fail Mary” game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, ruling a touchdown catch for Golden Tate on a play that clearly was an interception by M.D. Jennings. The Packers were robbed in the 14-12 Week 3 loss on “Monday Night Football.”

He became a symbol for the failures of a group of substitutes, as well as the ending to lingering labor battle. The real officials returned six days later.

Easley quickly slid back into anonymity after a week or so, but he’ll return to the public eye on July 7 in Seattle, when he serves as an umpire in a celebrity softball game hosted by Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.

“Remember the Ref who called TD during the Green Bay Game Monday Night??? His name is Lance Easley and he is going to Umpire for us July 7th! Don’t be surprised if a few flags are thrown,” Sherman wrote.

Umpires don’t throw flags in softball, but maybe Easley doesn’t know that.

When Will Jeremy Affeldt Appreciation Day Be

If you found out your employer had accidentally given you an extra $500,000, and that it was well within your rights to keep the money, would you give it back? Well that’s exactly what San Francisco Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt did.

Affeldt was set to earn $4 million in 2010 under an existing contract with the Giants when they negotiated a two-year, $10 million extension. When the 2010 amount was rewritten into the new contract, someone made a clerical error and typed $4.5 million instead. The Giants and Affeldt signed it without recognizing the mistake.

Affeldt got three opinions saying the contract was ironclad and he could keep the extra $500,000, from the Players Association, agent Michael Moye and even Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans….

“I talked to Bobby the next day and said, ‘I can’t take that money,’ ” Affeldt said. ” ‘I won’t sleep well at night knowing I took that money because every time I open my paycheck I’ll know it’s not right.’”

Affeldt thinks his honesty helped make negotiations smoother last winter when he and the team agreed to a 3-year, $18 million contract.

Johnny Manziel’s dream offseason continued this weekend. The Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner tweeted that he was at Pebble Beach playing golf with his family.

Manziel has not been shy about sharing all the amazing things he has done. He tweets pictures when he’s at big-time NBA or MLB games, and he’s gone on vacations to Mexico, New Orleans, and Toronto in recent months. The lavish lifestyle has led to many people questioning how he is able to afford all the luxuries despite being a college student. Others

have wondered how he even has time to be a student with all the fun things he seems to be doing.

Manziel responded to some of the criticism he heard over Twitter after tweeting about his golfing exploits:
